The New Friend?

So awhile back I came up with an ingenious of making new friends.

I don't try to meet new people.

Seriously. I can't be bothered with all the drama of "developing" new friendships. They are a time-suck and you never know how it will turn out. Will this 'new' friend be worth all the energy? Or will it end with realization that you have just wasted a great deal of time with an idiot? Well... there's no way to know. Not unless they supplied you with "friendship references", which is highly unlikely.

It got me to thinking. I have some really great friends. And they have some really great friends. What if I were to just "steal" friends from my friends? These people have already proven their ability to be a "good" friend... and I trust my friend's judgment. What could be better? "Stealing" friends is a solid and proven way to make good lasting meaningful frienships.

Well - turns out that I found a way that was slightly better... trusting my own judgment. I am talking about "renewing" old friendships. Those people that at some time in your life you were fairly good friends with... but for one reason or another you drifted apart. I don't know - maybe you were just at different places in your life, or you didn't seem to have much in common or you were just busy and didn't make much time for each other. Either way... you drifted apart. Then you run into them one day, exchange numbers and arrange to go for coffee. When you get together you have such a great time that you don't know why you ever drifted. The two of you know each other's backgrounds, you have history and you have already successfully put each other through the friendship "test". It is the best and easiest way to make new friends.

A few months ago I started a breakfast group with a few of my friends from High School. Once a month we get together and catch up over brunch. Our group has slowly been growing as each of us invite others from High School that we have kept in touch with.

It's awesome. I went for brunch with 10 girls this morning, all of whom I can honestly say are really cool people. And we can have great conversation, because we've already covered that awkward "getting-to-know-you" phase.

I will admit that one of my lenten vows may have been compromised. What can I say? A group of girls that went to High School together and Gossip.

so does that mean that we can go for sushi soon? I need sushi. These new friends that you speak of, will they be taking over my position in your life? I will not be discarded so easily though, I will stalk you regularly if you try to end our friendship. I will not be deterred!
