Moms

I have been coveting someone else's mom.

This isn't new. I've been coveting MacKenzie Baker's mom since we were in kindergarden and she would bring us a plate of sliced cheese with crackers and apple slices for snack. You know the type - She was the "supermom" who was constantly volunteering at the school, attended all of Colleen & Kenzie's "special events" and still had time to be part of a bookclub. She was the mom that all other mom's wished they could be.

And I wished, when I was young, that she was my mom.

Somehow I thought I would outgrow this.

I was wrong.

I think it was renewed last year after my mother told me that she didn't like Stephen Lewis because he was NDP. I had recently gone to an event that Mrs. Baker had organized - a fundraiser for MCC's work for AIDS in Africa - Stephen Lewis was the keynote speaker. She told me about the hope she feels when she hears him speak.

Or the very fact that she came the Dallaire event that I organized, congratulated me on a job well-done and asked me what it was like to talk to such a spectacular man. My mom (although she claims to like Dallaire) choose to stay at home and watch TV.

I now get regular emails from Mrs. Baker telling me about events taking place in Calgary and how I can get involved. She is an inspiring woman.

I still covet Kenzie Baker's Mom.

We all need inspiring people and in some capacities they are not always our moms. Of course my mom does love the AIDS walk and she accompanies me each year and I love her for it.
